Director's Life Upgrade
Build a Better Business Without Sacrificing the Rest of Your Life
The aim isn't simply:
bigger business = success.
A director can have a growing company while simultaneously losing time, health, relationships and enjoyment.
Michael will help you look at the business and the life around it. If keeping the company successful requires the rest of your life to be sacrificed, that is part of the business problem too.
The 12 Director Lifestyle Areas
1. Work and Career
Your work has a big effect on your identity, energy and day-to-day life. Michael will help you look at whether your current role still fits your strengths, where the business has made you indispensable and what parts of the job you are doing because they genuinely matter versus because you have never let them go.
Questions include:
- Does my role still fit my strengths?
- What work drains me most consistently?
- Where am I indispensable by design or accident?
- What success metric actually matters to me?
- Am I building or just maintaining?
- What am I tolerating that needs fixing?
- If I stepped back, what would fail?
- What does success cost me right now?
2. Leadership Skills
Michael will help you look at how you lead, where the team relies on you too much and whether there are conversations or decisions you already know need to happen.
Questions include:
- What hard conversation am I delaying?
- Where do people rely on me too much?
- What behaviour do I allow that weakens the culture?
- Do people bring me problems or hide them?
- How clearly do I communicate expectations?
- Where do I avoid accountability?
- How do I react when challenged?
- Who am I developing as leaders?
3. Use of Time
How you spend your week often shows what your real priorities are more clearly than anything written in a plan. Michael will help you look at where time disappears, how much of the week is spent putting out fires and which parts of your calendar no longer deserve the time they receive.
Questions include:
- What consistently takes my time without enough return?
- Where does my calendar contradict what I say are my priorities?
- How much time am I spending putting out fires instead of building?
- What would break if I worked five fewer hours each week?
- Where am I confusing being busy with getting a result?
- Am I in charge of my time, or are other people?
4. Family
Family often carries the cost of business pressure even though that cost never appears in the accounts. Michael will help you look at whether you are really present when you are home, where work keeps interfering and which family moments are repeatedly being pushed aside.
Questions include:
- How present am I when I am home?
- What does my family sacrifice for my work, and is it worth it?
- What does my family need more of from me?
- How often does work stress come home with me?
- What family moments am I repeatedly missing?
5. Fun, Adventure and Enjoyment
Fun can quietly disappear once responsibility increases. Michael will help you look at whether you still make time for things you enjoy or whether enjoyment has become something that will happen eventually, once the business is finally less busy.
Questions include:
- When did I last feel genuinely excited about something outside work?
- What fun have I postponed for more than 12 months?
- What did I enjoy before responsibility grew?
- How often do I treat work as more important than enjoying my life?
- What would change if I actually put fun into the calendar?
6. Partner or Marriage Relationship
Business pressure does not automatically stop when you get home. Michael will help you consider what running the business is asking from your partner or relationship, whether work keeps winning over connection and whether there are things at home you are putting off in the same way you might put off a difficult business conversation.
Questions include:
- How has running the business changed our relationship?
- What pressure does my partner quietly carry?
- What resentment might be forming unnoticed?
- When did we last feel like a team?
- How often do I choose work over connection?
- What does my partner need from me at the moment?
7. Financial Health
A successful-looking business does not necessarily mean the director feels financially secure. Michael will help you look at the relationship between business profitability, personal money, cashflow pressure and the financial risks that affect your decisions.
Questions include:
- How clear is my personal financial picture?
- What money stress do I treat as normal?
- What financial risk keeps me awake?
- How much margin do I really have?
- How often do I avoid looking at the numbers?
- What does enough actually look like?
8. Health and Fitness
Your physical health affects how much energy and patience you bring to work. Michael is not there to become your personal trainer. The point is to look honestly at whether the way you are running the business leaves enough room for sleep, movement, health appointments and the basic things that help you function properly.
Questions include:
- Is my current lifestyle physically sustainable?
- How is my sleep affecting my decisions?
- What warning signs do I ignore?
- What health issues am I postponing?
- How does stress show up physically?
- What would better health make easier?
9. Mental and Emotional Health
Directors often carry things they cannot easily discuss with the team. Michael will help you look at how much of that load you are carrying alone, whether you have useful people to speak with and what happens to your decision-making when the pressure builds.
Questions include:
- How often do I feel overwhelmed?
- Who do I talk to honestly?
- What anxiety have I started treating as normal?
- What mental load do I carry silently?
- Where do I lack support?
- What would feeling steadier change?
10. Inner Space or Faith
When there is no obvious answer and circumstances are outside your control, your beliefs and values have a large influence on what you do next. This area is about looking at what grounds you and what you rely on when things become difficult.
Questions include:
- What grounds me when pressure rises?
- What values guide my hardest decisions?
- What restores perspective for me?
- What belief sustains me long term?
- What gives me peace consistently?
11. Social Life and Friendships
Directors can become isolated without ever deciding to become isolated. The business takes more time, family gets the rest and friendships gradually disappear from the calendar. Michael will help you look at whether you still have people and relationships outside the business that matter to you.
Questions include:
- Who do I spend time with regularly?
- Who challenges me outside work?
- What friendships have faded and why?
- Do I isolate when I am under pressure?
- Who knows me outside my work?
- What connection do I miss?
12. Influences and Daily Inputs
What you repeatedly watch, read, listen to and surround yourself with changes how you think. Michael will help you look at the information, people and habits that are filling your attention every day and whether they are helping you think more clearly or making life noisier.
Questions include:
- What do I consume every day without thinking about it?
- How does my phone affect my mood?
- What information increases my anxiety?
- Who influences my thinking most?
- What inputs help me think clearly?
- What boundaries protect my attention?
- What would I remove immediately?
The Business Is Only Part of the Result
This is not about turning business advisory into therapy.
It is about recognising that running a business affects the rest of your life.
If the business becomes more profitable but you never see your family, that matters. If growth depends on you working every spare hour, that matters. If better systems can give you ten hours back every week, what you do with those ten hours matters too.
The aim is to make the business better without making the rest of your life worse.
